Harvesting: Matures in about 90 days.
Uses: Whether harvested early for scallions (green onions), for summer meals, or winter storage, onions need rich, well-drained soil and good weed control. Tightly spaced green onions fit well in ornamental plantings.
Location: Choose a weed-free, well-drained location. Raised beds are ideal. Onions are good for intercropping with other garden plants, especially early-maturing spring greens. Do not plant where other onion family crops have been grown in the past 3 years.
Sowing: Direct-seed in spring when the soil reaches 50 F. Plant seed ¼ inch deep, ½ inch apart, in rows 12 to 18 inches apart. Thin to 4-inch spacing for large bulbs, 2-inch spacing for smaller bulbs but higher yields, or 1-inch spacing for scallions.
USDA Zones: 3-9
Planting Depth: 1/2" inch
Spacing: Plants to 3-4" inches apart, 12-24" inches between rows
Sun/Shade: Full Sun
Germination: 10-15 days (Depending on conditions)
Soil: Well-drained, rich soil, high in organic matter, neutral pH. Optimum pH is 6.2 to 6.8. Requires plentiful, even moisture for good yields.
Water: Onions have shallow root systems and need consistent moisture and good weed control. Water weekly if weather is dry, and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pests & Disease: Practice crop rotation of at least 3 years to control pests and diseases. Compost all onion residues.
Species Information: Onion varieties are categorized not only by color (red, yellow, white) but also according to day length; how much day light there is when onions stop forming tops, or new green leaves, and start making bulbs. Most onion varieties begin bulb formation when specific daytime temperatures and day lengths are reached during the growing season. If you are planting transplants or sets, you will find types suitable to your area in any good nursery, although they will sometimes only be labeled as white, yellow or red.m Whether harvested early for scallions (green onions), for summer meals, or winter storage, onions need rich, well-drained soil and good weed control. Tightly spaced green onions fit well in ornamental plantings.
Long Day (LD) and Short Day (SD) Types: Varieties are designated as LD or SD. LD types begin to form bulbs when day length is longer than 15 to 16 hours. Plant LD types in the spring from Virginia northward. SD types begin to form bulbs when day lengths are longer than 11 or 12 hours. SD types are spring or fall-planted in Virginia, and fall- planted in the South. (Long Day Onions begin to form a bulb when the day length reaches 14 or more hours. Intermediate Day Onions begin to form a bulb when the day length reaches 12-14 hours. Short Day Onions begin to form a bulb when day length reaches 10-12 hours. )
Information: Onions form bulbs in response to changes in day length, but different varieties have different "trigger points" that stimulate bulb formation. Short day onion varieties start to form bulbs as soon as day length exceeds 10 to 12 hours, but long day onions won't start to bulb until days are 14 to 16 hours long. Ideally, you want the onions to keep growing as long as possible before lengthening days trigger them to bulb, so different varieties work in the southern, central, and northern regions. The sweetest onions are short day onions that grow best in mild-winter climates. Short day onions mature in about 80 days when planting in the spring. Short day onions don't store well because they contain so much water. After harvest keep them in the fridge.
