Needles: 4 to 6" glossy green needles in bundles of 5
Bark: Tiered effect, branches emerge in whorled groups, like stacks of umbrellas along trunk
Cones: Cones of 8-18 cm, solitary or by 2, dark green, with thick scales with losangic yellow apophysis without shedding; hanging; déhiscents with maturity; edible seed, tastes like almond, from 1 to 1,5 cm with very reduced wing or goes away; ripe in 2 years
Habitat: Dry, rocky slopes and ridges in moderate to high elevations.  China, Burma; from 1000 to 3300 m; very widespread; introduced in Europe and the USA in 1895
Range: Canary Islands
Growth Rate:  Slow to medium
Soil:  Best in uniform textured soil, either clay or loam, good drainage
Maintenance:  Low; on large plants needles drop can accumulate on inner branches and need to be shaken to remove, if desired.

Water:  Needs supplemental, not as tough as P. eldarica and P. halepensis
Landscape Value:  Tropical appearance; silhouette tree, good for framing a view; tall cascade-like effect; specimen tree
Discussion: The wood, sawdust and resins from various species of pine can cause dermatitis in sensitive people.  named according to its discoverer the father Armand David, French missionary, in 1880
